COLLECTION FRANCESC ARGEMÍ I CASAMADA
Chapel master, organist, violinist and composer from Badalona (Badalona 1821-Vinaròs 1887).
He was orphaned at the age of seven, at which time he entered Sant Jeroni de la Murtra, under the tutelage of his maternal uncle, Father Pere Casamada, who belonged to the community of this monastery. There he studied music theory, harmony and composition, under the tutelage of the monks Jaume Vila and Andreu Cantallops, and learned to play the organ and violin.
After the revolt of 1835, which caused the dispersion of the Jerónimos community and the destruction of the monastery, Francesc Argemí remained under the tutelage of his uncle who became resident vicar of the parish of Santa Maria. During this period, he continued his studies at the Conservatory of Santa Maria del Pi in Barcelona.
Once he had finished his musical studies, he won the exams to become a chapel master and organist in Martorell in 1844. A position he would hold until 1852, the year in which he won new exams, in this case in Vinaròs, where he held the position of chapel master, organist and director of the municipal band.
Francesc Argemí i Casamada was the author of a large number of pieces, both ecclesiastical and secular, a sample of which is part of this collection that also includes some older compositions, possibly from Sant Jeroni de la Murtra.
