New information about Quintus Licinius’s house

Tuesday, 29th November, 7 p.m.

29 November 2022 - 19:00 a 20:30

Free admission until full capacity

The discovery, in one of the rooms excavated in the Clos de la Torre in the 1930s, of the tabula hospitalis, a hospitality pact between the municipality of Baetulo and Quintus Licini in 98 AD, was the first evidence of the possible existence of this building. During the 1950s, the knowledge about it was expanded by the excavations carried out by J. M. Cuyàs, where the remains of a large garden with a central apse pond and a set of rooms in the SW gallery were found. In 1976 J. Guitart made an approximation to the general architectural configuration of the property, including a building articulated around an atrium found to the south of the garden in the excavations of the 1930s.

The new archaeological interventions carried out in numbers 2 and 8 of the Assembly of Catalonia, between 2005 and 2011, complete the general plan of this building that exceeds the limits of the republican city. In addition, the knowledge of its construction system, its architectural and decorative configuration, its insertion within the urban fabric of Baetulo and the urban development of this sector of the city since its foundation in the 1st century BC is expanded.

The lecture that will be held by the archaeologist Jacinto Sánchez is part of the Museum’s second cycle of Archaeological Novelties.
