May the earth rest lightly on you, Josep Maria
Josep Maria Padrós Cuyàs (1933-2025) has left us. A self-taught historian and archaeologist, he inherited from his uncle Josep Maria Cuyàs i Tolosa a passion for history and archaeology and, especially, for the Roman world.
Padrós participated in the works that, in the 1950s, brought to light the heart of the ancient Roman city of Baetulo, in the area known as Clos de la Torre, one of the most exceptional archaeological finds that have taken place in our city in the last hundred years. He also directed, for five years, the archaeological excavations at the Can Sent-romà complex in Tiana, a site of great importance and chronological scope with which he always had a close relationship. A core of volunteers, passionate like him, about history and archaeology, was formed around this archaeological establishment and for years they have kept his work alive.
He held the position of director of the Museum of Badalona between 1971 and 1975, succeeding Josep Sala i Pascual at the head of the institution. During his directorship, he promoted the incorporation of specialized professionals into the Museum team, worked to consolidate the educational function of the institution and promoted the creation of an archaeological excavation team in the city. He also carried out outstanding work in the defense, vindication and conservation of the Badalona heritage. He promoted the declaration of the monastery of Sant Jeroni de la Murtra as a national monument and worked to make possible the restoration of the refectory and the convent kitchen, as well as the opening of the path from Badalona to the monastery via Can Mora. He was also responsible for the first catalogue of historical and archaeological monuments in Badalona, which was delivered to the City Council in 1975.
Passionate about Badalona, he worked tirelessly throughout his life for its history and heritage, maintaining a close relationship with the Museum where he always generously shared his knowledge and experience.
Author of several studies, his latest works include La Tiana desconeguda. Tresors de la vall de Montalegre (2006), the memoirs Abans que la memòria se m’esborri (2019) and the publication with the Group of Scholars for the Historical Recognition of Badalona L’orgull de ser Badaloní (2023).
We will miss you, Josep Maria. May the ground be light to you.
