SUMMARY:Lecture: Compasses\, dividers and navigation charts: the orientation of ships in the Mediterranean in the late Middle Ages
DESCRIPTION:Lecture: Compasses\, dividers and navigation charts: the orientation of ships in the Mediterranean in the late Middle Ages. By Ramon J. Pujades i Bataller\, head of the Department of Collections\, Heritage and Research of the Barcelona History Museum. \nMedieval navigation took a very important leap from the 11th century. First\, the spread of the compass allowed navigation on the high seas to be carried out throughout the year\, while specifying the direction that the ship followed while sailing. In the 12th century\, this knowledge began to be gathered and put into writing in the form of portolans chart or lists of the distances that separated each port from the next port on the route by a certain compass direction. In the 13th century\, this information was transferred to the graphic format of a map\, giving rise to the appearance and spread of navigation charts. The navigation chart\, dividers\, and compass thus became the instruments that\, together with the traditional depth sounder\, allowed medieval sailors to orient themselves in the sea in order to cross it from one end to the other. The conference will try to explain the most unique features and data of that fascinating process. \nThis lecture is part of the series of conferences organized by the Badalona Museum and the Badalona Medieval Festival Association\, which this year will focus on navigation in the Middle Ages. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lecture: The navy in medieval Catalonia based on documentary\, archaeological and iconographic sources
DESCRIPTION:Lecture The navy in medieval Catalonia based on documentary\, archaeological and iconographic sources by Dr. Marcel Pujol i Hamelink\, professor of Archaeology at the Escola Superior de Conservació i Restauració de Béns Culturals de Catalunya. \nThe conference will discuss the medieval Catalan navy (8th-15th centuries)\, explaining the three basic functions of the boats (fishing\, trade and war) and how these conditioned their shape\, size and propulsion system. On the other hand\, it will explain how\, where and who built them\, also according to their function. One of the most important aspects will be to explain the naval and nautical revolution that occurred at the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th centuries\, and the role played by their crews (skipper\, nauxer\, master of the ship). All the information will highlight the three sources of information used by historians: archaeological\, written and iconographic\, that is\, objects\, words and images. \nThis talk is part of the series of lectures organized by the Museum of Badalona and the Medieval Festival Association\, which this year will focus on navigation in the Middle Ages.

SUMMARY:Guided tour to the House of the Dolphins and the House of the Ivy
DESCRIPTION:Guided tour in the two musealize patrician houses of the Roman city of Baetulo\, the House of the Dolphins and the House of the Ivy\, which allows you to discover how the city’s elites lived at the end of the 1st century BC\, enriched by the production and wine marketing. \nThe House of the Dolphins preserves several rooms located around the atrium\, other rooms related to the peristyle or garden and a work area for wine production. Also noteworthy are the high-quality mosaics\, as well as the remains of original murals. \n\n\nIn the House of the Ivy you can see a work area with wine tanks and several rooms distributed around an atrium. It also includes some singularities such as the oecus (summer dining room)\, of large proportions with original pavements of tiled opus signinum\, or a section of the street (cardo maximus) that separated the two houses. In this domus the three visuals stand out especially. One that explains the production and marketing of the wine that generated so much wealth for the city of Baetulo\, another that immerses the visitor in the atrium of the domus and a third that brings us closer to food in Roman times\, from the raw material until the end of the banquet. \nBoth houses have touch modules for the blind people. \nThe price of this activity includes entry to the Roman baths-Decumanus space.\nMeeting point: House of the Ivy. Lladó\, 55.\n\n

SUMMARY:Book presentation Baetulo: marques i terrisseries d'àmfores
DESCRIPTION:Presentation of the book Baetulo: marques i terrisseries d’àmfores. The volume is part of the Corpus international des timbres amphoriques collection; 37\, edited by Cèsar Carreras\, Montserrat Comas and Josep Guitart and published by the Institut d’Estudis Catalans with the collaboration of the Institut d’Arqueologia Clàssica (ICAC) and the Museu de Badalona. \nBaetulo: marques i terrisseries d’àmfores is the fifth volume of the Catalan series\, and is entirely dedicated to Baetulo\, amphora marks and those elements linked to epigraphy such as pottery or wine producers\, essential elements for a complete study of the wine economy. The first volume of this series was already dedicated to Baetulo\, at that time Montserrat Comas was beginning her studies on epigraphy and compiled 235 amphora marks. Today\, twenty-eight years later\, three times as many are published\, 614. This fact highlights the importance of the city\, which has the highest number of brands of the coastal cities of the Tarragona region\, even more than Tarraco or Empúries. Therefore\, Baetulo was probably the main export port of Laietà wine between the late republic and the beginning of the high empire and\, therefore\, the reference for Laietà wine in Roman times. \nThe volume presented includes\, in addition to the catalogue of amphora brands studied by Montserrat Comas and Cèsar Carreras\, four articles by various researchers on this topic. It explains the pottery and production centers known thanks to the dynamics of urban archaeology in Badalona in recent years. The interventions\, concentrated in the western suburb of Baetulo\, have shown the importance of the wine economy in the city and its territory in Roman times. \nThe presentation will be given by Cèsar Carreras and Montserrat Comas\, editors of the volume\, Clara Forn\, author\, and Piero Berni\, from the ICAC. \n  \n \n
