The cinema arrived to Badalona in 1898 with the firsts street projections, and in 1904 the city already had its first movie theater. Thus the intense relationship between seventh art and badalonins began.
This close connection can be seen in the exhibition The Great Illusion. Cinema in Badalona from 1898 to 1975 that invites us to discover the history, the advances, the anecdotes, and the countless episodes of shared memory that are hidden in the darkness of a movie theater.
The exhibition is structured in different thematic sections that combine local aspects, such as exhibition halls, programming or critics, with more general aspects such as technological evolution, the phenomenon of the star-system or the impact that had the omnipresent censorship in the cinematographic production in the Franco's Spain.
The exhibition, which is completed by the publication of a book of the same title written by the historian Núria Casals, is also a tribute to cinema and to all those who, in dark and difficult times, could find in cinema a window to the world and a way of escaping of their everyday life.
The great illusion is about to start! Turn off the lights. Silence.
